SUMMARY:

This dissertation investigates the use of the Photomath application in the context of Mathematics Education, combining an analysis of the scientific literature on the topic with an empirical investigation of its contributions to learning quadratic functions. Grounded in Rabardel’s Instrumental Genesis Theory and Artigue’s Didactic Engineering, the study sought to understand both the research trends related to the application and the appropriation processes developed by students during its use in planned learning situations. Methodologically, the research adopted a mixed-methods approach and was structured in a multipaper format. The first article consisted of a descriptive-exploratory bibliometric study, complemented by qualitative analyses, conducted in the Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases, covering the period from 2014 to 2026. The findings revealed a significant increase in publications on Photomath in recent years, a predominance of studies focused on mathematics learning, and a limited explicit use of Instrumental Genesis Theory as an analytical
framework. The second article corresponded to a qualitative study developed through a pedagogical workshop on quadratic functions with high school students. Data analysis showed that the use of Photomath supported error identification, procedure revision, interpretation of graphical representations, and understanding of concepts related to quadratic functions. Evidence of instrumentation and instrumentalization processes was also identified, indicating a gradual transformation of the application from a technological artifact into a learning
nstrument. The results suggest that the educational potential of Photomath depends on teacher mediation and the design of didactic situations that foster reflection, argumentation, and conceptual understanding. As an educational product, a teaching guide was developed for Basic Education mathematics teachers, providing guidelines and activity proposals for teaching quadratic functions mediated by the Photomath application. It is concluded that Photomath can contribute to mathematics learning when critically and purposefully integrated into pedagogical practices, expanding the possibilities for the use of digital technologies in Mathematics
Education.
