• Bringing up the research problem. Along with asphalt processing activity comes the need for large yards for storing raw materials, which must be recovered when production ceases. With this problem in mind, this work aims to promote the recovery of an area degraded by its use in asphalt processing, located in an urban area of the Cerrado biome in Bahia, in the city of Barreiras-BA. The project will be executed applying four recovery techniques: seedling planting, direct seeding, natural regeneration, and artificial perches. Using different planting systems for the species, the efficiency of the recovery techniques used will be evaluated through monitoring of the area to be recovered. It is expected to highlight the most effective method for recovering degraded areas (RAD) in construction sites used for storing raw materials for asphalt processing in a territory whose biome is the Cerrado.

• This dissertation analyzes the transformations in land use and territorial order in the Cerrado of the Upper Rio Preto, in Formosa do Rio Preto (Bahia), a strategic area of the MATOPIBA agricultural frontier. It investigates how state policies, agricultural expansion programs, and instruments of environmental and land regulation have shaped a conflictual coexistence between large agribusiness enterprises and geraizeiro communities in a valley historically occupied by traditional populations. Based on environmental history, documentary analysis (legislation, technical reports, judicial and administrative proceedings), and fieldwork with semi-structured interviews, the research triangulates the trajectories of agribusiness and local communities, examining the economic, sociopolitical, and ecological dimensions of the conflict. From this material, it discusses how the advance of large-scale commodity production, superimposed on common-use territories, has reconfigured interactions between humans and non-humans, representations of nature, and conservation practices in the Cerrado. The case of the Rio Preto Valley is interpreted as an emblematic example of “conservation through conflict,” in which preserved landscapes result less from prior planning and more from the friction between land financialization, environmental regulation, and the persistence of traditional ways of life. By contrasting the geraizeiro agro-extractive and pastoral way of life with export-oriented industrial agriculture, the dissertation highlights how competing projects of the future for the Cerrado contribute, through their implications, to conservation and to environmental and territorial justice in western Bahia.

• The Cerrado is the second largest biome in South America, constituting one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity of fauna and flora. Despite its rich biodiversity, the Cerrado is the most threatened biome in the country, with half of its area converted into agricultural land and planted pastures, making future research on native species with allelopathic potential unfeasible, many of which have not yet been studied. Since there are still few reports in the literature on the allelopathic potential of native species of the biome, understanding this is an essential strategy for reforestation and maintenance of its biodiversity, since seed germination and growth can be affected by allelochemicals released by neighboring plants. In this context, Myracrodruon urundeuva (Anacardiaceae) stands out, popularly called aroeira, aroeira-do-sertão or urundeúva, which is widely known in folk medicine. In addition to the occurrence of native species, cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) has been planted in the Cerrado due to the need to increase the production of this commodity and the favorable soil and climate conditions. Thus, aiming to simulate the natural impact of leaf litter, the objective of this research will be to evaluate the allelopathic effect of the decomposition of senescent leaves of M. urundeuva, at different concentrations and decomposition times, on the initial development of T. cacao and Panicum maximum, an invasive species of this crop. For this purpose, senescent leaves of aroeira will be collected, dried at room temperature, crushed and added to the pots containing the soil, considering the following concentrations: 0, 10, 20, 30 g/kg. Then, seedlings of PS 1319 cocoa, aged 3 months, or seeds of P. maximum will be placed. To evaluate the allelopathic effect on cocoa, the following variables will be evaluated: root and shoot length, fresh root and shoot mass, membrane permeability, chloroplast pigment content and carbohydrate content. In the case of P. maximum, the following variables will be considered: emergence, emergence speed index, root and shoot length, fresh root and shoot mass. In addition, a physical-chemical analysis of the soil will be performed, as well as a leaf analysis, to determine the levels of micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Bo, Cl and Co) and macronutrients (N, P, S, K, Mg and Ca) present in the leaves. The data will be subjected to analysis of variance and the means compared by the Tukey test at a 5% probability level, using the SISVAR program. Therefore, it is expected that the research will support the implementation of cocoa cultivation together with M. urundeuva, which has the potential to establish beneficial interactions with the cocoa tree in order to contribute to the development of the crop in the Cerrado, as well as reduce the occurrence of P. maximum.

• This research analyzes the contradictions between the high economic performance of agribusiness and the persistence of social vulnerability in the municipality of São Desidério – BA, using data from the Bolsa Família Program as an reference and articulating it with a critical approach to territorial dynamics under neoliberal rationality. Methodologically, this is a qualitative and quantitative study based on secondary data from official sources, combined with a bibliographic review on neoliberalism, territorial development, and social inequality. The results show that the municipality stands out nationally in the production of agricultural commodities, supported by high productivity, technological modernization, and integration into global supply chains. However, this economic dynamism does not translate into significant improvements in the population’s living conditions, as high levels of social vulnerability persist, expressed by the widespread dependence on income transfer policies and limitations in access to essential public services. The analysis demonstrates that this dissociation is not circumstantial but structural, resulting from a development model guided by export-oriented agribusiness, which concentrates income, land, and power while limiting social inclusion and economic diversification. It is concluded that the case of São Desidério reveals the limits of the neoliberal development model, highlighting the coexistence between wealth production and the reproduction of poverty, and indicating the need to reorient public policies and productive structures toward more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable alternatives.

• This dissertation, entitled “Intersectionality in Insurgent Territories: the Re(ex)sistence of Quilombola Women in Areas Affected by Environmental Crimes”, seeks to understand the multiple dimensions of the resistance of Quilombola women in the face of socio-environmental violations within their territories. The central research problem consists of understanding how these women articulate agency, memory, and cultural practices to confront situations of environmental racism and historical inequalities. The study adopts intersectionality as a theoretical-methodological framework, simultaneously considering race, gender, territory, and the socioeconomic position of the participants. The objectives of the research include analyzing the everyday experiences of Quilombola women, identifying strategies of resistance against environmental and political threats, and understanding the production of knowledge based on their lived experiences. The methodology combines qualitative research, bibliographic and documentary review, semi-structured interviews, and the analysis of images and ethnographic records, prioritizing attentive listening and the recognition of the participants’ agency. The study reveals that Quilombos constitute territories of resistance and memory, in which women play a central role in environmental, cultural, and political preservation, articulating traditional knowledge and legal claims. The findings demonstrate the importance of recognizing Quilombos not merely as geographic spaces, but as social and political constructions that promote bem viver (good living) and environmental justice, offering a deeper understanding of Quilombola women’s resistance against historical marginalization.

• Ensuring access to safe drinking water is crucial for promoting public health and human development. In light of this, this study evaluated the analytical coverage and compliance with drinking water quality standards of network-distributed water in the urban areas of the Western Bahia Regional Health Nucleus (NRS Oeste) in 2024, utilizing data from the Information System for Water Quality Surveillance for Human Consumption (SISAGUA). The research encompassed 36 municipalities distributed across the regions of Barreiras, Santa Maria da Vitória, and Ibotirama. The parameters analyzed were total coliforms, Escherichia coli, and turbidity, as well as the correlations among them and the seasonal influence on water quality. The relative analytical coverage was classified as optimal for all indicators (above 95%). Regarding water quality compliance in the NRS Oeste, total coliforms constituted the most limiting indicator (81.94% compliance), whereas turbidity (92.73%) and Escherichia coli (95.52%) demonstrated better alignment with current standards. Statistical tests revealed significant spatial asymmetry: Barreiras presented more robust results and effective treatment systems, even during the rainy season; Santa Maria da Vitória achieved considerable compliance, though mitigated by significant undersampling; and Ibotirama presented the most vulnerable scenario, concentrating the lowest potability rates and the highest seasonal sensitivity in Western Bahia.

• The ability of plants to respond to environmental variations is directly linked to the influence of biotic and abiotic factors regulating photosynthetic activity. In this context, phenology serves as a crucial tool for understanding species development patterns, as it allows for the assessment of responses to seasonal environmental fluctuations—particularly in biomes with pronounced climatic seasonality, such as the Cerrado. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between phenology and physiological dynamics in Aspidosperma tomentosum Mart. & Zucc. (pereiro-do-campo) and Himatanthus obovatus (Müll.Arg.) Woodson (tiborna-do- cerrado), focusing on photosynthetic pigment production and soluble carbohydrate accumulation across the dry and rainy seasons. The study was conducted in the Serra da Bandeira region (Barreiras, Bahia), monitoring 20 specimens of each species on a monthly basis for vegetative phenophases (budding, senescence, abscission, and leaf maturation) and reproductive phenophases (flowering and fruiting). Additionally, mature leaf samples were collected to quantify photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls a, b, and total, as well as carotenoids) and soluble carbohydrates. The results demonstrated that the phenological patterns and photosynthetic pigment levels of both species were strongly influenced by Cerrado seasonality. In A. tomentosum, leaf senescence and abscission intensified at the end of the dry season, followed by vigorous budding upon the onset of rains. The species showed no reproductive activity during the study period, indicating a supra-annual phenological pattern. Chlorophyll *a* levels varied, showing higher values during months with greater precipitation and relative humidity, and reductions during periods characterized by high solar radiation. Total soluble and non-reducing sugar contents accumulated during the dry season, suggesting an energy storage strategy in response to water deficit. Conversely, the higher levels of reducing sugars observed during the rainy season may be linked to supporting regrowth, source-sink dynamics, and metabolic adjustment mechanisms. Meanwhile, H. obovatus exhibited early sprouting, with flowering occurring predominantly during the rainy season and fruiting during the dry season. Regarding pigments, carotenoid levels tracked the prevalence of mature leaves and environmental variations, reflecting the species' physiological adaptation to seasonal conditions. Total soluble and non-reducing sugar contents were influenced by drought and high light intensity, whereas reducing sugar levels were a key factor for the flowering peak. Thus, the phenological and physiological variations observed in A. tomentosum and H. obovatus demonstrate the direct influence of climatic factors on the vegetative and photosynthetic dynamics of these species.

• This study analyzes state action in the possessory protection of traditional Fundo and Fecho de Pasto communities in Western Bahia, focusing on the case of the Capão do Modesto community, located in the municipality of Correntina. Based on an interdisciplinary approach that articulates elements from Human Geography, Law, and Environmental Sciences, the research investigates the relationships between territoriality, environmental identity, and land conflicts in a context marked by the expansion of agribusiness in the Cerrado biome. The study critically examines the effectiveness of public policies and legal instruments aimed at protecting these communities, considering the persistence of land grabbing, overlapping land registrations, and economic pressures on traditionally occupied territories. Methodologically, a qualitative approach is adopted, based on document analysis, literature review, and a case study. The central hypothesis is that state action has been insufficient to ensure effective possessory and territorial protection for these communities, contributing to the intensification of socio-environmental conflicts and vulnerabilities. The research aims to contribute to the debate on territorial justice, recognition of collective rights, and the preservation of the Cerrado biome.

• The study of water quality used for supply, production, and industrialization underpins technical decision-making and public policy. With adverse climatic events intensifying in recent years, affecting water availability due to decreased rainfall, the solution to seasonality in production is the use of irrigation from available water sources. Water hardness is a characteristic that refers to the presence of a significant concentration of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) ions. This project aims to evaluate the possible impact on irrigated garlic production in soils in western Bahia, using hard water from artesian wells, compared to the use of surface water. This research is expected to provide an analysis of the effects on the soil and garlic plant resulting from irrigation in the municipalities of Cotegipe and Cristópolis, Bahia, and a prediction of the expected long-term consequences, both negative and positive.

• Dimorphandra mollis (false barbatimão) is a tree species native to the Cerrado biome, exploited for the rutin extracted from its fruits, necessitating studies on its propagation for conservation purposes. This study evaluated the effect of growth regulators on the rooting of cuttings and the influence of light availability on the sexual propagation of D. mollis. For propagation by cuttings, apical herbaceous cuttings were collected from mother trees, and their bases were immersed in solutions of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), a commercial biostimulant (Stimulate®), and an aqueous extract of Cyperus rotundus (EAT). After 90 days, survival (%), rooting (%), and sprouting (%) were assessed. In sexual propagation, seeds were sown in tubes containing Cerrado soil and subjected to different shading levels: 0% (full sun), 30%, 50%, and 80%. Seedling emergence and the Emergence Speed Index were monitored daily, and after 90 days, seedling height, number of leaves, collar diameter, root length, total chlorophyll content, and fresh and dry biomass of both the root system and aerial parts were analyzed. The tested growth regulators did not stimulate root formation in the cuttings and are not recommended for this purpose. However, seedlings grown under 50% shading showed higher emergence, IVE, growth parameters, and biomass accumulation, indicating that this condition favors the initial growth of D. mollis.

Micropropagation, among other plant tissue culture techniques, has made it possible to obtain high-quality plants. The aim of this work was to evaluate an efficient protocol for the micropropagation of Aloe vera L. The experiment was carried out at the Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory of the company Elite Biotech in partnership with the Federal University of Western Bahia, located in the city of Barreiras, in the western region of Bahia. The plant material used was aloe explants, which were lateral shoots and apical meristems taken from the mother plant. The experimental design used was entirely randomized, and the data from the experiment was submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the means of the treatments were compared using the F test and Tukey's test at 5% probability. the concentration of BAP had a significant impact on the rate of multiplication of actin from the explants. As the concentration of BAP increased from 2.0 mg L-1 to 3.0 mg L-1, the multiplication rate increased, from 73% to 91% and as the concentration of BAP increased to 4.0 mg L-1, the multiplication rate decreased to 80%. At the end of 4 months, a total of 6250 explants were obtained under the effect of different concentrations of BAP. The results of the ANOVA indicated significant differences between the concentrations of BAP (p-value < 0.001), and Tukey's test showed that the mean difference between 2.0 mg L-1 and 3.0 mg L-1 of BAP was statistically significant (p < 0.05). It was concluded that the ideal concentration of BAP for production multiplication is 3.0 mg L-1.

• The Cerrado, Brazil’s second largest biome, is undergoing intense degradation, especially in the MATOPIBA region (Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia), making ecological restoration an urgent necessity. This study aimed to analyze the collection of native Cerrado seeds by rural communities in the far western region of Bahia, considering socioeconomic factors, preference criteria, and morphometric characterization of relevant species, with the goal of strengthening the ecological restoration supply chain. The research was conducted in two communities located in the municipality of São Desidério (Sítio do Rio Grande and Julião) and in the Rio de Ondas Settlement, part of the municipality of Luís Eduardo Magalhães. Data collection was performed through semi-structured interviews, free listing, participatory mapping workshops with community residents, as well as through the measurement of morphometric characteristics of fruits and seeds and the assessment of emergence parameters of the most preferred species. Results indicated that native Cerrado seed collection in far western Bahia is predominantly carried out by women (94.4%), with greater species diversity obtained by individuals with lower education levels. Ease of processing was the main selection criterion. Collection areas, located within typical cerrado and dry forest, involved travel distances ranging from 6.5 to 20 km. Additionally, 70 species were recorded in the Rio de Ondas Settlement and 48 in São Desidério, highlighting Hymenaea stigonocarpa (jatobá-do-cerrado), Anacardium humile (cajuzinho), and Parkia platycephala (sabiu) due to their combination of good vigor and rapid emergence, whereas others, such as Pterodon emarginatus (white sucupira) and Astrocaryum campestre (tucum), requir treatments to overcome dormancy. The integration of socioeconomic, morphometric, and germination data allowed the identification of priority species, while also reinforcing the importance of community protagonism and the technical selection of species with greater restoration potential, thereby strengthening the productive chain and the conservation of regional sociobiodiversity.

• The final disposal of municipal solid waste in sanitary landfills is a relatively recent practice in Brazilian geotechnical engineering. In this context, geotechnical monitoring of these structures is essential to ensure structural safety, environmental protection, and to advance the understanding of waste behavior. This study aimed to analyze the geotechnical behavior of a sanitary landfill located in the western region of Bahia State, Brazil, using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry and comparing it with conventional topographic surveying. The research focused on the vertical and horizontal displacements of the waste mass, the analysis of slope stability, and their correlation with local rainfall. The methodology involved acquiring topographic data through conventional leveling and UAV photogrammetry, allowing the validation of UAV-derived survey accuracy. During the construction phase, the unit weight of the waste was assessed by volumetric analysis of disposal cells, comparing field data with photogrammetric estimates. In the post-construction phase, vertical and horizontal displacements were monitored over successive campaigns, including the determination of displacement rates. Additionally, slope stability simulations were performed considering geotechnical and rainfall parameters. The results indicated that UAV photogrammetry achieved accuracy comparable to conventional leveling, validating its application in landfill monitoring. The average unit weight of the waste varied according to the filling stage, reflecting the degree of compaction achieved. In the post-construction period, vertical and horizontal displacements were influenced by rainfall intensity, allowing the identification of variations in settlement rates over time. The slope stability simulations demonstrated that rainfall has a direct effect on reducing the safety factor, highlighting the need for adequate drainage strategies. It is concluded that UAV photogrammetry is an effective alternative to conventional leveling, offering advantages in terms of coverage and operational efficiency. Furthermore, the observed correlation between rainfall and geotechnical behavior reinforces the importance of integrating local climatic variables into landfill planning and management. The study contributes to the improvement of monitoring techniques for small- and medium-sized landfills, providing technical insights for their safe and sustainable operation

• Due to use and occupation of Cerrado areas, it is necessary to develop propagation
techniques for native species, such as Copaifera depilis, in order to guarantee the
conservation of the flora, as well as understanding how they interact in the
environment. In this context, this work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of cuttings and
layers, using different concentrations of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), and of seminiferous
propagation associated with the use of gibberellic acid (GA3) in the production of C.
depilis seedlings,in addition to evaluating the allelopathic effect of leaves supplied on
the soil surface on the initial development of corn. In propagation by cuttings, they were
immersed in the following IBA concentrations (0, 800, 1600, 2400, 3200 mg /l). After
120 days, the following were evaluated: number of rooted cuttings, average number of
roots/cutting, average length of the three largest roots, mortality and stems formation.
In layering propagation, the layers were soaked in different IBA concentrations: 0, 500,
1000 and 1500mg/L. After 180 days, the following were evaluated: The rates of air
layering rooting, root/air layering, largest root length/air layering, stem formation and
shoots survival. In propagation via seminifera, a group of seeds was scarified and the
other was not, with all seeds immersed in GA3 for 24 hours, at concentrations of 0, 50,
100, 200 and 400mg/L. After 80 and 160 days, the following parameters were
analyzed: height, stem diameter, number of leaves and relative chlorophyll
content. After 160 days, the experiment was completed and the plants were separated
into the roots and top of the plant to determine fresh and dry mass. In allelopathic
experiments, dry leaves were used and found on the soil surface at concentrations of 0,
1, 2, 4, 6 and 10t/ha.After 30 days, a destructive analysis was carried out and the
following growth characteristics of the corn plants were evaluated: root, the aerial part
of plant, diameter, number of leaves, relative chlorophyll content of the second and
third leaves, fresh and dry mass of the leaves, root and aerial part. The data were
subjected to analysis of variance and the means were compared using the Scott-Knott
test, at a 5% probability level. The results obtained that propagation by cuttings and
layering are not viable for C. depilis, with 100% mortality of cuttings and layering,
respectively.Regarding seminiferous propagation, it was observed that there was no
significant effect of scarification and GA3 for the following characteristics: emergence,
height, stem diameter, number of leaves, relative chlorophyll content, size of the
smallest leaf and root size.Unlike other characteristics, there was a significant effect of
scarification, which promoted an increase in the size of the largest leaf, fresh mass of
the seedling, root and aerial part and dry mass of the seedling, root and aerial
part. For allelopathic activities, C. depilis leaf extracts showed potential, negatively
interfering in: emergence (4, 6 and 10t/ha), height (all concentrations), stem diameter
(6 and 10t/ha), fresh mass of seedling (6 and 10t/ha), the aerial part (2, 6 and 10t/ha)
and the root (6 and 10t/ha), in addition to the dry mass of the seedling (6 and 10 t/ha),
aerial part ( 2, 4, 6 and 10t/ha) and root (2, 4, 6 and 10t/ha). It is concluded that
propagation via semifera is efficient for the production of C. depilis seedlings, based on
the physical scarification of the seeds, and that the leaf extracts have allelopathic
potential, with a reduction in the growth of the model species (corn), demonstrating
potential for use as a natural herbicide, which requires experiments with spontaneous
plants.

• Given the growing demand for fresh and processed Theobroma cacao L. (cocoa)
products, there was a need to increase production in non-traditional areas, such as the
Cerrado. However, there are few studies that can guide the management of cacao tree
cultivation in these new areas. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the
performance of cocoa cultivars in the municipality of Riachão das Neves, western
region of Bahia. The tests were carried out on existing plantations at the BioBrasil
Produção de Mudas LTDA farm, with three cultivars: PS 1319, PS 40.7, BN 34 kept in
full sun, and at the Santa Helena farm, with PS 1319 cocoa individuals under different
light intensity levels: a) full sun from the beginning of planting (April/2022 –
September/2023); b) shading from the intercrop with Jaffa banana (April/2022 –
June/2023) and c) full sun after removing the shading (July/2023 – September/2023).
Growth characteristics (stem height and diameter) and phenology (leaf budburst,
flowering and fruiting) were evaluated monthly. On the same occasion, leaves and fruits
were collected for characterization. After analyzing the data collected at the BioBrasil
Farm, it was found that the largest stem diameter was in May/2023 for the three
cultivars. Regarding the intensity of leaf budburst, flowers, specific leaf area index,
fresh mass and dry mass, higher values were observed in the rainy season, regardless of
the cultivar. The BN 34 cultivar had a smaller leaf area in July 2023, and the PS 1319
and PS 40.7 cultivars had it in the following month. For the content of chlorophyll a, b
and total, the BN 34 cocoa leaves did not show a significant difference, however, there
was variation in the carotenoid content in the dry season; for cultivars PS 1319 and PS
40.7, increases were observed in the rainy season. The highest values for total soluble
sugar, reducing sugar and non-reducing sugar in the leaves occurred in the rainy season.
Regarding the number of fruits, the cultivar PS 1319 showed greater production
throughout the year. Regarding the total number of bobbins, cocoa PS 40.7 stood out
compared to the others. For the total number of aborted fruits, it was noticed that the
cultivar BN 34 had the lowest production, followed by PS 1319 and PS 40.7. For fruit
losses, PS 40.7 showed the highest losses, followed by BN 34 and PS 1319. The weight
of the fruit, skin, pulp, the length and diameter showed a reduction in September 2023.
The fresh mass of the pulp (healthy, hatched and viviparous seeds) had lower values in
the months of September, April and May. Healthy seeds had a reduction in average
during the months of April, July and June. Fresh seed mass showed reduced averages in
April, July and June. Regarding the total number of seeds, a greater quantity was noted
for cocoa beans PS 1319, followed by PS 40.7 and BN 34. For length and diameter,
cocoa seeds BN 34 presented the highest values, followed by PS 1319 and PS 40.7. The
same was observed for dry almond mass. In relation to the results obtained in the
experiment carried out at Santa Helena Farm, it was found that for the height of PS
1319 cocoa plants there was no difference between these plants, except in
September/2023. The diameter of the stem, leaf budburst and flowering had greatest
increases in the dry season for plants kept in full sun. Regarding the physiological

characterization of cocoa leaves maintained in different light levels and seasonality, it
was observed an increase in leaf area for cultivation in shaded conditions (rainy season).
For the specific leaf area, there was a superiority in plants grown in full sun (rainy and
autumn weather). The fresh and dry mass of leaves under shade demonstrate the highest
averages (rainy and summer). As for photosynthetic pigments, it was found that
chlorophyll a, b and total were not affected by the light condition, however, after the
month of July there was an increase in the levels of chlorophyll a and total, as well as a
reduction in the levels of chlorophyll b. For carotenoid levels, in the dry season, it was
noted that the leaves of plants grown in full sun had the highest overall average.
Regarding the total soluble sugar content of PS 1319 cocoa leaves, greater production
was observed in the rainy season for plants kept in full sun, however, for plants grown
under shade there was no variation. In relation to the reducing sugar content, higher
values were found in February 2023. As for the non-reducing sugar content of leaves, a
similar performance to that observed for the total soluble sugar was noticed. Thus,
cocoa plants have demonstrated potential for production in the western region of Bahia,
making non-traditional areas available for this cultivation.

• The western region of the state of Bahia, which was naturally occupied by the Cerrado, has now been appropriated by agribusiness and has become one of the main areas for the expansion of the country's agricultural frontier, with an emphasis on grain production. One of the aims of the West-East Integration Railway (FIOL) in western Bahia is to transport agricultural products from the region. Since anthropogenic action is responsible for a number of changes to the environment, this study aims to assess the main environmental impacts of the construction of the FIOL in the geraizeira community of Vereda Grande, in the Guará river valley, in São Desidério-BA. Based on the aspects of FIOL's implementation activities in the geraizeira community in question, the aim is to quanti-qualitatively analyze the main environmental impacts that have interfered with the environmental and territorial dynamics of the region, as well as to understand the environmental perception of the Geraizeiros in relation to these possible impacts. To carry out this research, the methodological procedures adopted were bibliographical research, documentary analysis and exploratory fieldwork, with direct observation and the application of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.

• The Cerrado, a Brazilian biome notable for its rich biodiversity, has vast economic and nutritional potential, attracting interest from sectors such as the food industry. This study emphasizes the relevance of bioprospecting microorganisms, particularly lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which are recognized for their probiotic properties and promote gastrointestinal tract health. The investigation focused on isolating LAB strains from native Cerrado fruits, such as lobeira (Solanum lycocarpum) and wild passion fruit (Passiflora cincinnata Mast.), in addition to developing a methodological protocol reinforcing the possibility of isolating these microorganisms from fruits, and not only from dairy products. This possibility emerges as a promising trend for the development of future applications of non-dairy external foods for consumers with lactose intolerance. The results revealed the presence of LAB strains with probiotic potential in trained fruits, corroborating their beneficial properties for health. The methodology applied ensured the prediction and effectiveness of strain isolation, highlighting the importance of spontaneous fermentation in sample preparation. Research and exploration of Cerrado fruits are essential to demonstrate their potential, promoting a balance between economic development and environmental conservation. This synergy is essential for disseminating knowledge about the region's fruits, highlighting the benefits that this biome offers, while preserving its rich biodiversity.

• Soil-cement mixtures are, even today, despite more modern techniques, one of the most used materials in civil construction. There is great use of Portland cement in it, in order to achieve characteristics of resistance to compression and low water absorption. The objective of this work was to investigate the physical, mechanical and performance changes promoted to the soil-cement mixture with chemical and microbiological enrichment, aiming at mineral bioprecipitation (MICP, from the English MicrobiallyInduced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation). For this purpose, the following materials were established: Portland cement CP II-Z-32 and Cerrado soil for the mixture (in a 1:13 ratio). Three mix were used in the research: (i) unenriched or reference or R; (ii) enriched with urea solution (40 g.L-1 ) or U; (iii) enriched with inoculate of Sporosarcina pasteurii, strain ATCC 11859, in growth syrup (40 g.L-1 ) or E. Test specimens (CP) with reduced geometry (50x100 mm) were molded from each of the established traits, using normal Proctor energy, with curing in a humid chamber together with aspersion, and measuring the compressive strength (RCS), strain at break (DRU) and water absorption (AA), according to the parameters established in the norm, at the ages of 7, 14 and 28 days. The CP were also evaluated by X-ray diffraction (DRX) and infrared absorption spectroscopy (FT-IR) to analyze the presence of calcium carbonate and other carbonate precipitates. The data obtained were confirmed in their normality of distribution by the Shapiro-Wilk test and homoscedasticity by the Levene test, with a two-way Analysis of Variance for Repeated Measures (MANOVA), followed by the Bonferroni post hoc. The results obtained indicated that there were significant differences between the mix at the ages tested, as well as interference in their deformation. Relevant significant difference (p≤0.05) was found for RCS between the R, U and E mix at the ages of 7 days and between the R and U traits at the ages of 28 days. For AA, a significant difference (p≤0.05) was found between the ages of 7 and 14 days for mix R, U and E; at the age of 28 days between the R and U traits. The DRU was also analyzed, with observation of the occurrence of a deformation level at rupture when in ultimate stresses, for the E mix, which indicates a statistically relevant performance gain (p ≤0.05) of the material, in relation to the R. The DRX and FT-IT analyzes also demonstrate that, for the enriched samples, there was deposition of calcium carbonates as well as other forms of calcium carbonate junction, including hydrated lime. Thus, having the soil-cement mixture enriched as raw material, it is possible to indicate such a microbiological technique as an alternative and sustainable cementing strategy for reducing environmental pressure, mainly seen on the Cerrado biome, when producing and applying materials cementitious.

• Artibeus lituratus is an important neotropical frugivorous bat species belonging to the family Phyllostomidae. Despite its widespread distribution, there are no detailed reproductive studies on the mammary glands of this species. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze and characterize the histology and hormonal regulation of mammary glands and ovaries of Artibeus lituratus during reproductive phases. For chapter one, twenty sexually mature females were collected and divided into 3 sample groups according to reproductive status (non-reproductive, advanced pregnancy, and lactating), and for chapter two, thirty sexually mature females were collected and divided into 6 sample groups according to reproductive status (non-reproductive, early pregnancy, mid-pregnancy, late pregnancy, lactating, and pregnant lactating) and subjected to anatomical, histological, morphometric, immunohistochemical (ERα, PR, PCNA, P63, α-actin, LHR, and FSHR), and serum assays for progesterone, estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone. The results demonstrated that the mammary glands of A. lituratus are lateralized and exhibit a morphology very similar to that described for mammals, consisting of simple cuboidal epithelium, connective tissue, and adipose tissue. The action of hormones progesterone via PR and estradiol via ERα coordinates the entire development and differentiation of secretory epithelium during advanced pregnancy and lactation. All data indicate that A. lituratus possesses promising characteristics, and in the future, it can be used as an experimental animal for mammary gland studies. In the ovaries, the results showed that serum concentrations of FSH and LH are constant and minimally variable among the groups. The action of these hormones on the ovaries of A. lituratus creates a highly interactive microenvironment, with the development of follicles in different stages. The majority of ovarian structures respond to LH and FSH. The Theca, granulosa, and stroma exhibited greater variation in FSHR and LHR expression, while the corpus luteum expressed them in all cells from early to late pregnancy. There was no dominance in receptor expression among the ovaries of A. lituratus.

• Popularly known as "free-tailed bat," Molossus molossus is a bat species well known in Brazil
due to its high representativeness (large number of colonies and specimens) and its easy
presence in house attics, being dispersed throughout much of the country, and can be found in
more than 16 Brazilian states. It is known that females of this species have a morphofunctional
asymmetry in the reproductive tract, but there are no studies describing the
morphophysiological characteristics and hormonal control of reproduction in this species.
Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze and describe the morphophysiological and
morphometric variations and hormonal control of the female reproductive organs of M.
molossus during its different reproductive phases, seeking to evaluate the impact and
modifications that different reproductive hormones trigger on this reproductive tract. For this
purpose, 20 sexually adult females were captured and divided into 4 sample groups (n=5): 1.
Non-reproductive females (NON); 2. Early pregnancy (PI); 3. Advanced pregnancy (PII); 4.
and Lactating (LAC) females. Blood samples were collected from all specimens for hormonal
measurements of estradiol and progesterone, and the reproductive organs were removed and
processed for histological analysis, three-dimensional reconstruction, and
immunohistochemical analysis to locate estrogen alpha receptors (ERα) and progesterone
receptors (PR), 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) enzyme, and proliferating cell
nuclear antigen (PCNA) antibody. The results show that the female reproductive system of M.
molossus is composed of ovaries, a short bicornuate uterus, slightly convoluted uterine tubes,
and vagina. The reproductive system presents a distinct morphofunctional asymmetry, with a
marked dextro-dominance in which the right side is more developed than the left. The ovaries
have a large number of interstitial glands and a small but persistent corpus luteum. Ovulation
is simple, unilateral, and preferential, occurring exclusively in the right ovary. Follicular
development in the left ovary usually does not progress beyond the secondary stage.
Implantation is fundic and preferential, occurring exclusively in the right uterine horn. The
placenta is formed with two distinct chorioallantoic portions, one diffuse endotheliochorial,
which covers the entire uterine cavity and regresses in the final stages of pregnancy, and the
principal discoidal hemochorial portion, formed at the site of implantation. The uterine cervix
presents a pseudostratified epithelium, while the vagina has a slightly keratinized stratified
epithelium. Additionally, the uterus is regulated by the hormones estradiol and progesterone
and their respective hormone receptors. The uterine horns showed a difference in expression
for hormone receptors, which may be one of the causes of the dextro-dominant asymmetry
present in the uterus. Apparently, the endometrial glands and epithelium can produce
progesterone, which would help in local uterine maintenance during the phases of the cycle
when the corpus luteum and placenta are not present. It seems that the expressions of ERα and
PR are synchronized, influencing the reproductive cycle of the species.

• Brazil stands out as a country of remarkable biodiversity, with impressive richness in terms of species count and the complexity of its biomes. Among these, the Cerrado biome excels due to the diversity of its landscapes, flora, and fauna. Among the countless species present in the Cerrado, we can mention Salacia crassifolia (Mart. ex Schult.) G. Don., commonly known as bacupari, cascudo, or saputá, which holds significance due to its multiple uses, including culinary, medicinal, and landscaping purposes. Since ancient times, the properties of plants have been harnessed for various purposes, including the search for alternatives to control phytopathogens through plant extracts containing secondary metabolites with potential antifungal properties. Despite the studies already described, there is a gap in research regarding the antifungal potential of the species in question. Hence, there is a need to investigate the antifungal activity of extracts from native plants of the Cerrado, aiming to identify and comprehend the secondary metabolites with such properties. This is a pioneering study in assessing the effects of stem bark and leaf extracts of S. crassifolia, as the species lacks studies directed at the activity of phytopathogenic fungi in relation to its ethanol extracts. With the objective of identifying and evaluating the phytochemical profile and activity against phytopathogenic fungi of the leaf and stem ethanol extracts of Salacia crassifolia, samples of bark and leaves were collected from two matrices located in the rural area of the Western Bahia Municipality. To determine the phytochemical profile of the extracts (EES and EEL), the methodology proposed by Barbosa and colleagues (2001) was employed. Regarding the assessment of the extract's effect on mycelial growth, a randomized bioassay with four repetitions was conducted, using an experimental unit consisting of three Petri dishes. The results of this study offer new perspectives concerning the utilization of S. crassifolia as a potential source of substances with antifungal properties.

• The urbanization of rivers due to rapid population growth and temporal variations are factors
that influence the characteristics of water quality. Further studies to understand these variations
need to be developed. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the space-time variation in water
quality in the Grande and Ondas rivers in the city of Barreiras, Bahia, Brazil. Monitoring was
conducted over one year, with water samples collected at 11 points distributed along the rivers.
Eight physicochemical parameters (Electrical Conductivity, pH, alkalinity, apparent and true
color, turbidity, Dissolved Oxygen, and Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and three
microbiological indicators (heterotrophic bacteria, total coliforms, and thermotolerant
coliforms) were analyzed. Space-time variation was evaluated using multivariate techniques,
Principal Component Analysis/Factor Analysis (PCA/FA), and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis
(HCA). The PCA/FA results highlighted nine of the eleven parameters as the main drivers of
water quality variations, with the highest increases observed during the rainy season,
particularly at points influenced by sewage discharge and urban areas. HCA grouped the results
from the 11 points into three main groups: Group 1 corresponded to points influenced by
sewage discharge, Group 2 grouped points mainly influenced by urban areas, and Group 3
included points in rural areas. From these groupings, the negative influence of urbanization on
statistically significant variations between groups and periods was observed, with the most
degraded conditions in Group 1 and the best conditions in Group 3. Evaluation of variations
between monitoring periods showed that precipitation significantly impacted the increase or
decrease of the parameters evaluated due to surface runoff associated with urbanization and
increased river flow.

• Due to the need to view the Cerrado with care, a study was conducted on the ornamental potential of native species from the Cerrado in Bahia, considering two aspects: landscaping and cut flowers. It is believed that introducing native plants into people's lives through gardens and arrangements can contribute to increased awareness and appreciation of native flora, thereby assisting in biodiversity conservation. To do this, the Serra da Bandeira in Barreiras, Bahia, was selected, which presents two phytogeographic contexts of the Cerrado: typical Cerrado and rocky outcrop Cerrado. The landscaping prospecting study was conducted between February and July 2023, with monthly excursions along existing trails. The target species were collected for documentation in the BRBA Herbarium. In the field, data on reproductive phenology, habit, environment, light conditions, leaf morphology, flowers, and fruits were analyzed. Additionally, threat level and endemism were considered through analyses of online databases. The cut flower study focused on Calliandra dysantha Benth. To assess longevity, flower stems were collected and subjected to the following bioassays: collection time (08h – 09h; 11h – 12h; and 17h – 18h), different floral opening stages (bud, pre-anthesis, and anthesis), the effect of leaves on storage, and sensitivity to conditioning in a sucrose vase solution (bud: 0.0%, 0.5%, and 1.0%; inflorescence in anthesis: 0%, 1%, 2%, 5%, and 10%). Daily measurements were taken for fresh mass loss (%) and volume of absorbed solution (mL). For carbohydrate metabolism characterization, inflorescences in anthesis and their respective leaves were collected at different times of the day (early morning and late afternoon) and at different floral opening stages (bud, pre-anthesis, anthesis, and senescent); soluble sugars were extracted in 80% alcohol and quantified for total soluble sugars (TSS), reducing sugars (RS), and non-reducing sugars (NRS). After prospecting, 36 species with landscaping potential were identified, with four of them exclusive to the Cerrado domain, and none under threat. In the end, 15 species were recommended for multifunctional use (gardens and pots), and 21 species for garden use. Regarding C. dysantha, the species has a lifespan of two days. It is recommended to collect the stems in the bud stage in the afternoon, store them without leaves, and in a vase solution containing 0.5% sucrose. Carbohydrate metabolism studies indicate that inflorescences in the pre-anthesis stage contain higher levels of TSS and NRS, which are related to providing energy for the completion of floral opening. Therefore, it is evident that there are several native Cerrado species with ornamental potential, and C. dysantha has not yet proven viable for cut flowers due to its durability. However, this study provides a foundational knowledge base for further research on the floral physiology of the species.

• The collection, direct use and commercialization of native flora resources are activities
practiced, above all, by traditional communities, linked to sociocultural, identity and
economic issues. The removal of parts of plants for medicinal and woody use and for
agro-industries is a practice that is very present in the Cerrado of Western Bahia,
practices that are intrinsic to the cultural formation of these places. However, with the
increase in commercial demand for extractive products, exploitation may be carried out
inappropriately, causing, in some cases, a significant reduction in natural populations of
the species used. In this sense, this work aims to evaluate the effect of extractive
activities on the structure and organization of populations and natural communities and
point out indicators for the construction of a sustainable management protocol for
extractive species. Specifically, this work aims to ecologically characterize the native
species Dimorphandra mollis Benth, a focus of extractivism, with potential for
commercialization of non-timber products, used by the rural community of Almas. To
this end, the characterization of the structure and productivity of populations in natural
communities, the structure and productivity of populations in extractive areas, as well as
the phytosociological attributes of these populations within the aforementioned systems
were considered as ecological attributes. Furthermore, the objective was to characterize
the landscape surrounding the extractive areas, considering relevant aspects, such as:
presence and phytophysiognomic identity of forest fragments, human occupation, direct
area of operation of the West East Integration Railway (FIOL) and other projects. From
this perspective, extractivism is a common activity in the areas of influence of FIOL
works in São Desidério and this work assumes crucial relevance with regard to the
characterization of sustainable extractivism activity, and can, therefore, be a focus
activity for compensation projects environment that value local cultural practices. The
research was carried out in the community of Almas, belonging to the municipality of
São Desidério, Bahia, local extractivists. Data collection on populations of native
species in the Cerrado of Western Bahia was carried out by establishing continuous
plots in the areas of influence of the communities (extractive areas and control areas),
based on phytosociological analysis, NDVI (Index of Vegetation by Normalized
Difference) and morphometric parameters of fruits. It was found that extractive activity
interferes with the structure and forest composition of the Cerrado area, presenting
results of phytosociological parameters with significant differences between areas. The
landscape analysis showed a marked difference between the areas, indicating that
extractive activity contributes to the structural disconfiguration of the landscape with
dominance of D. mollis to the detriment of low floristic diversity in the sampled
fragment. Furthermore, significant differences were observed in morphometric variables
and fruit production of D. mollis between areas. Based on the ecological indicators
evaluated in this work, it was possible to develop a protocol of good management
practices to benefit both the extractive activity and the focus species, based on
suggestions for potential strategies to promote and/or accelerate the area's restoration
process. in natural regeneration.

• Anthropogenic actions can trigger significant environmental impacts on the
environment, even more so when they are associated with land use and occupation, such
as the construction of land transport modes. In this sense, the implementation of the
West-East Integration Railway - FIOL, considered a project that has extensive physical
infrastructure, could generate environmental impacts from its construction. Therefore,
the present study sought to evaluate land use and coverage in FIOL's Area of Direct
Influence at points of environmental and social relevance in order to evaluate existing
environmental impacts. The study area comprises the FIOL Area of Direct Influence,
located in a stretch between the villages of Estiva and Almas, São Desidério – BA. Field
visits were carried out to characterize the area and identify the classes to be evaluated.
Land use and cover was evaluated through supervised classification of spatial images on
the Google Earth Engine platform. Images made available by the satellite
LANDSAT/LE07/C02/T1_L2 and LANDSAT/LC08/C02/T1_L2 from the months of
April and June of the years 2012 and 2022 were used, referring to the period before and
after the construction of this section of the railway. The classifications were carried out
using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm made available by the Google Earth Engine
cloud platform. The classes chosen for the digital classification process were: Class 1
(water bodies); Class 2 (natural vegetation cover); Class 3 (Anthropized vegetation
cover); Class 4 (anthropic environments) and Class 5 (exposed soil). Respectively, the
identification and assessment of environmental impacts was also carried out using the
Leopold matrix. The results regarding land use and occupation show that over a 11 year
period there was a significant reduction of 9.5% in native vegetation and an increase of
around 10% in areas with exposed soil in FIOL's Area of Direct Influence. With the
implementation of the railway, it was noticeable the advance on new previously
preserved natural areas, which were degraded, mainly in areas of greater susceptibility
to environmental damage, such as APPs and in places where there was intense earth
movement, altering the landscape. In this context, the conversion of native areas into
agricultural areas, and the presence of the railway as a mechanism responsible for
suppressing previously isolated areas, was considered a significantly impactful factor. In
relation to the assessment of the impact matrix and the activities carried out during the
implementation of FIOL, the suppression of native vegetation was the activity with the
highest level of significance. This activity impacted different environmental aspects,
which culminated in environmental impacts related to the loss of biodiversity,
fragmentation of habitats and the emergence of erosion processes. As a way of
minimizing the environmental impacts described, measures to mitigate and compensate
for the effects of transport infrastructure on biodiversity are essential, specifically in
relation to environmental impacts relating to flora and fauna.

• Every year, tourism is responsible for transporting millions of people between diferente
locations on the planet, seeking leisure, entertainment and visiting various attractions.
Its implementation has great complexity and relevance in aspects, highlighting the
socioeconomic aspect, as it encompasses public and private investments, which seeks to
generate revenue, jobs and income in the various locations in which it is carried out.
Planning around its development is necessary, carried out primarily by everyone
involved in its practice. Given the context, Brazil and Bahia have been developing
public policies over time with the intention of categorizing, organizing and managing
tourist areas in their respective territories. Both adopted the concept of a tourist region,
comprising a set of municipalities with an interest in the development of tourist activity
based on one or more historical, cultural, economic and/or geographic characteristics.
Base for implementing the Tourism Regionalization Program (PRT), within the scope of
the National Tourism Plan (PNT). At this juncture, the Caminhos do Oeste tourist
region was created in 2004, currently made up of eight municipalities, namely:
Barreiras, Bom Jesus da Lapa, Caetité, Correntina, Cocos, Formosa do Rio Preto,
Jaborandi and São Desidério. In view of the above, the present work aims to diagnose
the socioeconomic implications promoted by the institutionalization and development of
tourist activities in Caminhos do Oeste. The research is exploratory and descriptive,
with a qualitative approach, carried out in two stages: Literature review for theoretical
contextualization about tourism and tourist regionalization, identification and analysis
of legal instruments related to its planning, institutional organization and public policies
in the country focused on the theme and the historical, environmental, socioeconomic,
infrastructure and territorial characterization of the study area; Construction of the
institutional and socioeconomic profile of the Caminhos do Oeste tourist region,
through the identification and characterization of the legislation and institutionalization
of tourism in the municipalities that make up or comprised the tourist region and the
survey, systematization and tabulation of secondary data to present related
socioeconomic indices tourism in the state, regional and municipal context. It was
identified that between 2004 and 2022 there were six changes regarding the number and
municipalities that made up the tourist region in the different PRT publications during
this period. At the state level, Caminhos do Oeste presented modest socioeconomic
results, especially when analyzing their participation in the total revenue from ACTs
and the contribution of formal jobs. Among the municipalities, in addition to the
diversity of tourist attractions, different realities were identified regarding
institutionalization and socioeconomic gains arising from the tourist activity carried out
in them. To make better use of the tourist potential of Caminhos do Oeste, it is
recommended that COMTUR participate more effectively in carrying out the study on
the tourism situation in the respective municipalities; engagement of all sectors linked
to the efficient operation and development of tourism in the region, thus providing
tourists with a quality activity based on tourism that prioritizes sustainability, but
without neglecting the profitability that the activity can provide to those involved and/or
service providers. services in these municipalities.

• Floral symmetry is a remarkable feature impacting both pollination ecology and floral biology, symmetry patterns (asymmetry, monosymmetry, dissymmetry and polysymmetry) are often associated with pollinator flight orientation and, at least partially, in directing pollen movement to pollinator bodies. Despite their relevance in plant biology and their fundamental role in the evolutionary dynamics of flowers, few studies have provided quantitative characterizations of floral forms and their symmetry patterns, so little exploring these structures in an evolutionary context. This is the case of the diverse genus Chamaecrista, which presents pollen flowers, pollinated exclusively by bee vibration, the flowers in general are asymmetric with the presence of a modified petal - cucullus. Comparative studies for the genus, including investigations of floral symmetry in an evolutionary context are lacking. Thus, our main objective was to characterise floral diversity quantitatively, analyse how this diversity is distributed in the genus and observe how it is correlated and conserved throughout its evolutionary history.. For such, 115 species were analysed by images and/or exsiccata, of these 71 (three individuals per species) were dissected and later analysed for the description of the floral symmetry planes, and in the morphometric analysis for the floral forms and the cucullus (Fourier Elliptical Analysis - FEA). Moreover, to evaluate the evolutionary correlation, conservation and distribution of the characters and their phylogenetic significance, the PGLS (Phylogenetic Generalized Least Squares) model, the Phylogenetic Signal and Ancestral character estimation for the continuous characters were implemented, respectively. We found eight symmetry patterns for Chamaecrista corolla morphology, predominantly asymmetric. Although, there was not a strict correspondence between the shapes, considering that some patterns appeared more than once in different clades, we noted that species of the same clade, in general, tend to group together. The evolutionary correlation analysis was not significant, however, both shape and size are conserved in certain lineages and had a significant phylogenetic signal. Here, we characterised, classified and explored the floral symmetry of Chamaecrista from a phylogenetic perspective. We observed a diversity of symmetries across the genus, and detected conservatism of floral shape and size throughout phylogeny, indicating a possible relationship with pollinator-mediated selective pressures, as suggested in the literature. However, studies in floral biology, development of structures and detailing of other organs (e.g., gynoecium and androecium) are still needed to better understand the processes involved in the patterns described here.

• The herbivorous insects are highly specialized because they have the ability to control and
redirect the development of host plants to obtain food and shelter. These insects induce the
formation of branches that are tissue cells or plant organs that present abnormal growth, and
may be formed by hyperplasia or hypertrophy, in response to the action of cecidogenic agents.
The distribution of the galls in plants can be influenced by seasonality and phenological events,
which will determine the reproductive success of the chickens. The species
Manihot
caerulescens Pohl
presents a diversity of insects that induce chickens that are still incipient in
the Cerrado of West Bahia. In this context, this work aimed at (1) getting to know the fauna
associated with the branches of the species
M. caerulescens and (2) relating the presence of
branches with the phenological events of the host plant species and climate variables. In order
to achieve the objectives, 24 monthly collections were made between the months of July 2018
and June 2020, at Serra da Bandeira, located in the city of Barreiras-BA. For characterization
and analysis of the branches 5 leaves were randomly collected from each host plant, totaling
180 leaves, and also 1 inflorescence per plant, totaling 90 inflorescences. The gallop material
was transported to the laboratory for sorting and morphological analysis of the branches. The
insects obtained were mounted on slides and used in morphological studies. For the
phenological characterization of the species under study, the marked individuals were observed
on a monthly basis, and the phenological and vegetative phenophases were recorded,
photographed and analyzed. The results showed that
Iatrophobia brasiliensis has preference on
the induction of galls on the leaves or inflorescences, a behavior not registered for this species
of cecidomyid. The associated fauna was composed of tenants, parasitoids and successors. The
infestation by galls presented greater occurrence in the dry season. Regarding the vegetative
and reproductive phenological events in
M. caerulescens it was verified that the percentage of
individuals with leaves, shoots and fruits was higher in the rainy season, while flowering in the
dry season. In this context, this work constitutes an important contribution to the knowledge of
the diversity patterns of
Manihot, as well as of Iatrophobia in the Cerrado of Bahia.

• Red ceramic waste (RCW) from the construction industry is still a problem to be addressed at national level. Uneven disposal of this material generates serious environmental problems. However, research has shown that the use of RCW, in an adequate fineness, may present pozzolanic characteristics, making it possible to use it as a mineral addition to Portland cement in partial replacement to clinker. In view of the above, this research aims to verify the pozzolanic potentiality of the red ceramic waste from pottery located in Riachão das Neves / BA, comminuted in particles smaller than 45μm for partial replacement of Portland cement type CPV ARI RS, in the content. 30% by mass and the effects of the use of this residue on sulphate attack performance. The steps taken to fulfill this objective include: the physicochemical characterization of the red ceramic residue; determine the pozzolanic reactivity of the residue by the Modified Chapelle Method; the pozzolanicity assessment of the replacement of 30% by weight of cement by RCW by the Fratini Test; reaction kinetics of cement pastes with 30% replacement by RCW, with emphasis on the determination of portlandite consumption and apparent porosity variation of pastes over 182 days; the effects of replacing 30% of cement by RCW on mortars in the water / binder ratio of 0.35; 0.45 and 0.55 in the evolution of compressive strength and apparent porosity and also verify the performance of RCW in mitigating the sodium sulfate attack in mortars. The RCW had an average consumption of 907 mg of Ca(OH)2 / g. The partial replacement of 30% by mass of cement by RCW attributed pozzolanicity to non-pozzollanic cement. The X - ray diffraction and thermogravimetry assays in 30% RCW pastes showed a consumption of Portlandite over time, indicating pozzolanic activity. The 30% RCW mortars submitted to the axial compression test presented inferior performance in all ages and water / agglomerates ratios when compared to their peers without substitution. The use of RCW provided the mortars a superior performance when submitted in an aggressive environment

• The aim of the present study was to analyze and compare the structure of the entomological community of vereda and dense cerrado in western Bahia. For this, pitfall traps were used. A total of 34,383 individuals were collected, distributed in 20 orders from May 2014 to April 2015, totaling twelve collections. The Cerrado Denso was considered the most abundant phytophysiognomy, with 32,152 individuals, while in Vereda 9,379 individuals were collected. The rainy season was the most representative in terms of number of individuals. The most representative insect orders were Acari, with 20,250 individuals, followed by Formicidae with 9,496 individuals, colembolla with 7,226 and Araneae with 1,317 specimens. The least representative taxa in the analyzed areas were Trichoptera with 6 individuals and Embioptera with 5 individuals. The orders Pseudoscorpionida, Solifugae, Embioptera, Isoptera, Psocoptera and Trichoptera were exclusive of the Cerrado dense area. In terms of constancy, Formicidae and Orthoptera stood out with 100% occurrence in collections in both phytophysiognomies. Studies focusing on entomofauna surveys in the region are of paramount importance. For this reason, a greater effort is required in the knowledge of the prevalence of these invertebrates, given the importance they exert in maintaining the ecological balance.

• The objective of this work was to evaluate a Oxisol with a Sandy loam texture in Western Bahia, Brazil, using as parameters: Microbial Soil Biomass (MSB), Basal Soil Respiration (BSR), Microbial Quotient (qMic), Metabolic Quotient (qCO2), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Bulk density (Bd) and Carbon Stocks (C_st). The experimental design was a randomized block design with four replications. The treatments were: Soybean (S) under Conventional Tillage (S_CT), S under No Tillage System (S_NTS); Cotton (C) under Conventional Tillage (C_CT); C under CT in consortium with Millet (Mt); C under NTS in succession to S, Crotalaria (C), Corn (Cr) and Brachiaria (B), and C under NTS in succession to S and Sorghum (So), having as reference an area of Native Savannah (NS), adjacent to the experimental area. The results obtained show that the NTS, in relation to the CT, promotes the values of MSB, TOC, qMic and reduces the values of qCO2 in the evaluated soil layers. In addition, the NTS promoted the values of C_st, contrasting with the values observed in the soil under CT, allowing to conclude that the NTS improves the soil quality when compared to the CT.

• The recent accelerated and disorderly urban growth of the city of Barreiras (BA), caused by the advent of agribusiness and the consequent migrations, together with the large appropriation of areas more suitable for housing by the real estate market, creating the so-called real estate speculation, the population of the city to the occupation of areas whose geology and geomorphology are unfavorable. They are places that, before being anthropized, would require a study on the morphological characteristics of the land, but whose appropriation was given without adequate infrastructure, especially with regard to urban drainage, land use and land use planning and adequate stabilization of the slopes, causing populations in these areas to be at constant risk, and thus susceptible to natural disasters, such as mass movements and floods. One of the most significant examples of this reported process is the set of neighborhoods created on the slopes of Serra do Mimo. According to the Urban Development Master Plan (PDDU) of the city of Barreiras, the Serra do Mimo is considered as a zone of controlled occupation, but has been heavily occupied without any concern or technical study of the problems that may occur, or even about possible solutions. This work seeks to study the consequences of urban sprawl in the neighborhood near the Mimo Mountains, seeking to understand the social and environmental implications of this occupation, done without planning, even with the consent of the municipality.

• In nature there is a range of chemicals produced by plants, which can offer options for diversifying weed control and endemics in agriculture, reducing or eliminating environmental contamination, preserving natural resources and ensuring the supply of high quality agricultural products. An important tree species of Cerrado, Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan, popularly known as Angico Branco exhibits a high competition with other plant species, preventing the growth of these in its vicinity. The present work had as objective to carry out the phytochemical study, to verify the antioxidant and allelopathy activity of A. colubrina. Plant material were collected from native forest of the Cerrado, located in the city of Serra Dourada - Bahia, after that extracts were obtained from leaves and stem, using ethyl alcohol, methanol alcohol, ethyl acetate and hexane. Qualitative Phytochemical analysis showed positive results for Saponins, Phenols, Flavonoids, Alkaloids, Triterpenes and Steroids. Antioxidant activity was observed in all extracts and the total phenols were measured. In vitro allelopathic assays have demonstrated a great potential of A. colubrina for use as a plant growth inhibitor.

• The Caatinga Biome is divided in Ecorregions, among them the Dunas do São Frascisco ecorregion is caracterized by the presence of quartz sand dunes, that overcome 100m high, with deep sandy soils with low fertility. They are connected by palm swamp sites crossed by rivers and streams– interdunar regions. The palm swamp is an important Brazilian savanna ecosystem, as well the swamp gallery forest, both shelters many plant and animal species that are not found anywhere else. Despite of it relevant function, the degradation level of the riparian forests are increasing due intense human action. Floristic surveys aims to get flora data as well as determine plants and environment features. Thereby the work objective was to make a survey of angiosperm species from riparian forest that compose the Brejos (local rural communities) located inside the Dunas e Veredas do Baixo Médio São Francisco Environmental Protection Area, Barra municipality, Bahia Western. The survey was done from August 2015 to July 2017 and included 12 rural communities. The floristic similarity comparison was made by Detrended Correspondence Analysis – DCA. The list of 187 collected species is presented in a table with predominance of Fabaceae, Cyperaceae, Melastomataceae, Euphorbiaceae, Asteraceae, Rubiaceae and Convolvulaceae. We identification of many invasive, exotic and native species on the palm swamp sites. Those palm swamps form a set of biodiversity that deserves more attention to conservation public policies. We expect that work serves as basis to complementary extensive studies about the effects of environmental, anthropic, nearby vegetation factors upon the interdunar regions and it plant distribution and dynamic.

• The inventory of conidial fungi associated with decomposing plant substrate was carried out in two areas of extreme importance for biological conservation within the Caatinga biome, in the region of Middle São Francisco, in the state of Bahia. Aiming to increase the biodiversity of conidial fungi collected, collections were made in the period starting from October/2016 to February/2017, covering the dry and the rainy season in the region. Leaves, branches, flowers and fruits were collected encompassing wide variety of material, in soil and submerged in rivers and ponds. The collected material was submitted to the washing in flowing water technique and plating in a moist chamber. For 21 days, the observation and collection of the reproductive structures of the conidial fungi were carried out under the stereomicroscope using a fine-needle and mounted on permanent blades in PVL resin mounting medium. The results are described in two chapters. In the first one, the biodiversity of conidial fungi collected in land litter is presented, resulting in nineteen species collected, whereas two of them are considered new records for the state of Bahia, Neta quadriguttata (Matsush.) de Hoog and Phialophora verrucosa Medlar. In the second chapter, the fungi collected in submerged litter are described, among the eighteen species collected, Dactylaria plovercovensis Goh & K.D. Hyde. was first recorded in America, Dictyochaeta coffeae (Maggi & Persiani) Whitton, McKenzie & K.D. Hyde. was first recorded in Brazil, and Falcocladium multivesiculatum S.F. Silveira, Alfenas, Crous & M.J. Wingf. was first recorded in Bahia. Thirty four species of conidial fungi were identified. This research expands the knowledge of the diversity of conidial fungi for the middle São Francisco.
